Question: If I want to return a typewriter for any reason, how do I go about this?
Answer: If you think there is something wrong with the typewriter you purchased from Classic Typewriters and you need to return a typewriter, please contact us first about the issue. (It could be a simple fix that can be done at your end such as the margins being set incorrectly, the carriage being locked, or the ribbon color selector being set on the stencil selection)
If you still decide to return the typewriter, the buyer must pay the return shipping. Once we have received the typewriter, and it doesn’t appear to be damaged or altered in any way (unless it was damaged when I shipped it to the buyer) then we will proceed in sending the buyer a full refund.
Question: What do you do to the typewriters when you say you clean / service them?
Answer: In most cases, cleaning the typewriters will usually involve removing the main covers of a typewriter to clean out the mechanisms and lubricate as required. A brush is used to remove all dust. The old oil/lubrication is removed before applying new lubrication. Any repairs that are needed will be carried out by skilled technicians.
If the old ink ribbon has expired, a new one will be supplied.
Question: “Do you ship internationally?”
Answer: We can only ship typewriters within the EU due to excessive and rising delivery costs. If you feel you really want a certain typewriter we have in stock and you live outside of the EU, please contact us for a shipping quote.
Question: “Do you use ‘stock’ images, or other pictures of typewriters to represent the machines you have for sale?”
Answer: All photos of the typewriters for sale by Classic Typewriters are original and taken by Simon himself, so, what you see is what you will receive.
Question: Why are your typewriters so expensive compared to ones on eBay
Answer: Most typewriters available on eBay or at car boot sales are much cheaper, the chances are, you won’t be able to use them right away, because when a typewriter has been unused for a number of years, the ink on the ribbon dries out, lubrication of the mechanicals dry out and you will have sticky keys etc. If you have neither skill nor time, you will likely have to spend around €100 to €200 in order to get your typewriter professionally serviced.
At Classic Typewriters, we have already invested the time and money required to get each typewriter ready to use as soon as you have unpacked it.
Question: Do you offer gift packaging?
Answer: Currently , we are unable to offer gift packaging for typewriters. For other products, please contact us by email and as we may provide the service at a nominal fee.
Question: Are your classic typewriters in working condition?
Answer: Yes, unless otherwise noted, each machine is cleaned and mechanically adjusted or repaired. The original paint, decals, and pinstripes are retained to preserve their value. Some damaged original parts may be replaced by parts from identical typewriters or new reproduction parts, if appropriate.
Please note that although all of our machines are functional when shipped, some models, particularly those from the 1920’s or earlier, are not recommended for prolonged use.
Question: What accessories are included in my typewriter order?
Answer: A fresh ribbon is included with your typewriter order. For portable typewriters, an original carrying case may be included if available. (condition of the carrying case is not part of the typewriter grading and is sold in as-is condition). A reproduction instructions manual may be included if available.
